With more and more powerful smartphones in our pockets, there’s a huge amount of data sitting in our bags – and while the majority of these phones come with desktop PC software that will backup the device, that’s not close by if you’re out and about, or on a long weekend and away from that data. Which is where MyMobileVault comes in handy.

This is an “Over the Air” synchronising solution – as long as your phone is online (either through Wi-Fi, or your network’s 3G or GPRS data connection), you’ll be able to back-up your data between the handset and the central online repository of MyMobileVault. It’s based on the SyncML standard, which has become a default standard thanks to support from Motorola, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and others, and supports sync of contacts, calendar, and push email in the latest spec.

Signing up to the service provides you with all of these, and a single SMS to your handset will configure the SyncML client on your phone – and manually inputting these values is an option if you want to (for example) only have your contacts backed up, leaving your calendar out of the mix). You can also view and manage the synced data online through a web based interface.

While I wouldn’t use MyMobileVault as my only back-up solution, it’s convenient and unobtrusive on my phone, and provides an extra level of re-assurance that if something does go wrong while I’m travelling, I can both get to my data, and can sync it back to a replacement handset.

Company Index: MyMobileVault.

Ewan, as if you need such, travelling usually with more than one handset. ;o)

The think I am worried about is the amount of data … every time I use Activesync for sync with my XDA it takes an insane amount of time - and that is with a cable. Is a solution like this with SyncML faster so a service like this could really be useful?

I do see a great value for a casual user though.

I might not need it, carrying 3 phones as I do, but I am the exception; as you point out, the casual user, or someone travelling light, would find this very useful.

There should be no reason at all that your PDA uses a long time for syncing via Activesync. Well, the first time you connect a PDA to a PC a lot of info will be exchanged (possible empty PDA, so mostly from PC to PDA). After that it should only sync new items. Do you sync mail with large attachments ? How long back are you syncing appointments? How many contacts do you have in Outlook (if used) ? More than 1000 is not recommended my MS - and that is 700 too much if you ask me :) What else - do you have special software on the PDA that connects to web via PC or anything other 3rd party solutions ?
